Less safe, more strain, fewer opportunities – new analysis reveals what will happen to your child’s education under Corbyn

New analysis has revealed the true threat of Corbyn’s Labour to our country’s schools.

By failing to get Brexit done, and by pursuing policies based upon a hard-left ideology, a Corbyn-led government would mean children are less safe, schools would be put under strain and pupils would have fewer opportunities.

The in-depth report from the Conservative Research Department evaluates the impacts of the following Labour policies:

  • The pledge to scrap Ofsted, ending independent inspections of schools – a move that would put children in danger, lowering standards and reducing safeguards.
  • The policy of continued EU free movement, combined with attacks on independent schools – which would significantly increase the demand for places in schools, often at short notice
  • The ideologically driven moves to close down good schools – damaging students’ education and preventing them from fulfilling their potential.

The report reveals:

  • Every school would go without an Ofsted inspection. In addition, 75,000 children in care would have no independent checks ups on their safety, whilst 152 different school inspection regimes would have to be set up across the country.
  • Continued free movement and attacks on private schools would mean 363,000 more children would need to be educated in our schools. £9.1 billion more would have to be spent educating these additional children.
  • Millions of pupils now in good or outstanding academies would lose their school place. 133,000 children would lose out on a place at a free school, and 100,000 children in independent schools would be moved into state schools at short notice, putting huge pressure on the system.

Commenting, Gavin Williamson, the Secretary of State for Education said:

“Over the past nine years Conservative-led governments have transformed the quality our schools, so that every child, no matter their background or where they live, gets the best start in life. But a Corbyn-led government would put this all at risk.
“By failing to get Brexit done and pursuing policies based upon a hard-left ideology he would damage our children’s education. This would mean fewer opportunities to get on in life and most worryingly, by removing independent inspections parents would no longer be able to be sure their children would be safe at school.
“Only the Conservative Party will make sure every child has a chance to succeed in life – by increasing school funding as well as improving standards and discipline.”

Commenting, Therese Coffey, Secretary of State for the Department of Work and Pensions, said:

“Corbyn’s Pension Tax will see ten million savers facing a huge bill forcing them to delay their retirement for almost three and a half years.
“This is just one of the ways a Corbyn government would hammer hardworking people on top of his plans to hike up taxes by £2,400 a year, as well as the cost of his plan for unlimited immigration and the chaos of 2020 being dominated by two more referendums – one on Brexit and another on Scottish independence.
“Only Boris Johnson and the Conservative Party can get Brexit done with a deal, get parliament working again and turbocharge our economy to unleash Britain’s potential.”
