Conservative candidates across the country have today written to their Labour opponents asking them to confirm where they stand on Brexit and whether they will campaign to remain or to leave if Labour inflicts the chaos of another EU referendum on the British people next year.

The move comes after Jeremy Corbyn confirmed that he would remain “neutral” at such a referendum. And it follows a pledge signed by every Conservative candidate to back Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal when, if a Conservative Majority Government is elected, it returns to Parliament before Christmas – so that we can get Brexit done by January.

Mr Corbyn has also refused to rule out a second independence referendum on Scottish independence.

The letters call on each Labour candidate to answer these three questions:

1. What is your plan to get Brexit done?

2. Will you remain neutral in a second referendum, and if not, how will you campaign?

3. Will you refuse to support any government which is reliant on the votes of the SNP and a second independence referendum?

Commenting, Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, said:

“Every single Conservative candidate is clear – we want to get Brexit done so that we can focus on our schools, our hospitals and keeping our streets safe.

“Voters have watched with dismay as parliamentary gridlock over Brexit has ground the country to a halt. The least they deserve is for their local candidates to be straight with them about what they propose to do about it.

“Whether it is Brexit, Scottish independence or immigration, Corbyn can’t say where he stands on the key issues and his only plan is for more delay and another two referendums.  The choice at this election is clear, Prime Minister Boris Johnson or Prime Ditherer Jeremy Corbyn.”
