Conservative Party Conference 2020: Day 3

Today at our virtual conference, we have continued to set out how we are transforming our country fundamentally and permanently for the better.

We will not be blown off course by the pandemic, but will continue to deliver on the priorities of the British people, and build back better from coronavirus.

We have an opportunity to unite and level up our country, delivering lasting change with more homes, plans to transform skills, more hospitals, more police, more schools, a greener economy and a fairer society.

Today at conference:

  • The Chancellor set out how the Government’s single priority is to create, support and extend opportunity to as many people as we can. We will not let talent wither, or waste, we will help all who want it, find new opportunity and develop new skills.
  • Through our Plan for Jobs, New Deal for Britain and Winter Economy Plan, we are transforming the provision of skills in this country, building more homes, schools and hospitals and delivering the infrastructure that will transform and level up all parts of the UK.
  • We will make it easier for those with the ambition and appetite to take risks and be bold, to do what they do best and create jobs and growth.
  • We will keep listening, keep striving to be creative in response to the challenges our economy faces, and where we can, we will act.
  • The Work and Pensions Secretary announced a new scheme to support people who have lost their job because of coronavirus, providing them with fresh opportunities and ensuring nobody is left without hope as we build back better.
  • Our unprecedented support of over £200 billion has protected millions of livelihoods and businesses since the start of the pandemic, from Bounce Back Loans to increases in Universal Credit, but we’ve always been clear that we cannot save every job.
  • We know the damaging effects of being out of work, so we will launch JETS – Job Entry Targeted Support – to support those left jobless because of coronavirus. Backed by £238 million, JETS will target those out of work for three months with tailored support, such as CV and interview coaching, to quickly get back into employment and could help a quarter of a million people.
  • Through schemes like JETS, part of our £30 billion Plan for Jobs, we will continue to protect, create and support people into jobs, to ensure no one is left without hope as we build back better.

We will unite and level up, delivering lasting change in parts of the country forgotten by successive governments. Now more than ever, we must harness the extraordinary national spirit we have seen in recent months so that we can build back better.

Commenting, Therese Coffey, Secretary of State for the Department of Work and Pensions, said:

“Corbyn’s Pension Tax will see ten million savers facing a huge bill forcing them to delay their retirement for almost three and a half years.
“This is just one of the ways a Corbyn government would hammer hardworking people on top of his plans to hike up taxes by £2,400 a year, as well as the cost of his plan for unlimited immigration and the chaos of 2020 being dominated by two more referendums – one on Brexit and another on Scottish independence.
“Only Boris Johnson and the Conservative Party can get Brexit done with a deal, get parliament working again and turbocharge our economy to unleash Britain’s potential.”
